Companies House identity verification for directors and PSCs

Directors and people with significant control must now verify their identity with Companies House. We do the check remotely as an Authorised Corporate Service Provider, and you receive your personal code.

In short: £75 per person. We verify the identity of a director or person with significant control (PSC) as a Companies House Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), through a short remote photo ID and video check plus supporting documents. Once we submit the verification, Companies House emails the person their 11-character personal code, normally within a few hours. It works for people living outside the UK, and for existing companies whoever formed them.

Who needs to verify

Since 18 November 2025, identity verification is a legal requirement under the Companies Act 2006. It applies to:

  • every director of a UK company, including directors who live abroad
  • every individual who is a person with significant control (PSC) — usually someone who owns more than 25% of the shares or votes, or otherwise controls the company
  • new companies: each director's personal code is part of the incorporation application

If you are both a director and a PSC, you verify once. You then give the same personal code for each role and for each company you are involved with.

The transition for existing companies

New directors and new PSCs appointed after 18 November 2025 must be verified when they are appointed or added (PSCs within 14 days). Everyone who was already in post has a 12-month transition period:

  • Existing directors give their personal code with the company's next confirmation statement filed on or after 18 November 2025. Companies House will not accept the statement without it.
  • Existing PSCs who are also directors have a 14-day window that starts the day after the company's confirmation statement date. Filing the statement early does not move the window.
  • Existing PSCs who are not directors have a 14-day window in their birth month: the first 14 days of that month. A PSC born on 22 January, for example, must verify between 1 and 14 January.

A PSC can ask Companies House for a 14-day extension, but only before the deadline passes. The safest approach is to verify well before any window opens.

What happens if you do not verify

Under section 167M of the Companies Act 2006, a person who acts as a director without having verified their identity commits an offence, and so do the company and every officer in default. The penalty is a fine. Companies House can also annotate the public register, and PSCs who fail to verify may be fined. Anything the director has done for the company remains valid, but the risk falls on the person and the company.

How our check works

  1. Order online and choose how many people need verifying.
  2. Each person receives a secure link. They give their full name, any former names, date of birth, home address, address history for the last 12 months and email address.
  3. They photograph their passport or photo ID and complete a short live video or selfie check, so we can confirm the document is genuine and belongs to them.
  4. They upload a proof of address. Our team reviews everything and asks for a clearer copy if needed.
  5. We submit the verification to Companies House. The person's personal code is emailed to them, normally within a few hours.

The whole check is remote. People living outside the UK can use it; they need at least one government-issued identity document. Our team can help in English, Lithuanian, Russian, French, German, Italian and Polish.

What each person needs

  • a valid passport or other government-issued photo ID
  • a recent proof of address, such as a bank statement or utility bill
  • their date of birth and home address history for the last 12 months
  • an email address they check, where the personal code will be sent
  • a phone or computer with a camera

Whoever formed your company

Identity verification belongs to the person, not to the company. It does not matter which agent formed your company, or whether you formed it yourself. You become our client and we verify you as your ACSP. Once verified, the public register shows the verification date and our name as the ACSP that carried it out.

You can also verify for free yourself through GOV.UK One Login. Our service suits people who want a person to help, whose documents do not work with the GOV.UK app, or who live abroad and want guidance in their own language.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting until the confirmation statement is due and then finding a director has not verified
  • Missing a non-director PSC's birth-month window
  • Using a name that does not match the passport, or an old address
  • Getting a personal code but never giving it to Companies House for each role

If you would rather not track any of this, our Annual Compliance Plan includes verification for directors and PSCs who need it. Changing who your PSCs are? See PSC Register Update. Appointing someone new? See Director Appointment and Resignation.

Frequently asked questions

How much does identity verification cost?

£75 per person, including VAT. Choose the number of people in the basket. Verifying yourself through GOV.UK One Login is free; our fee covers the check, document review and support.

Can you verify me if another agent formed my company?

Yes. Verification is for you as a person, not for the company. You become our client and we verify you as your ACSP, whoever formed the company.

I live outside the UK. Can I still verify?

Yes. Our check is fully remote. You need at least one government-issued identity document, such as your passport, and a camera on your phone or computer.

What is a Companies House personal code?

An 11-character code issued once you have verified. It belongs to you, stays the same for all your roles and companies, and is given to Companies House to show you are verified.

When do existing directors need to verify?

By the time the company files its next confirmation statement on or after 18 November 2025. The statement cannot be filed until every director's personal code has been given.

When do existing PSCs need to verify?

A PSC who is also a director has 14 days from the day after the confirmation statement date. A PSC who is not a director has the first 14 days of their birth month.

Do I need to verify again for each company?

No. You verify once and use the same personal code for every company and role. The code still has to be provided for each appointment.
