Company formation in Manchester

Launching a business in Manchester or elsewhere in Greater Manchester? Register your limited company online with us and keep your home address private if you need to.

In short: You can form a company for a Manchester business fully online with Form My Company. It will be registered in England and Wales, so our central London registered office works if you do not want your home address on the public register. Prices start at £290 incl. VAT, with the £100 Companies House fee included.

Starting a business in Manchester

Greater Manchester has set out where it expects the next decade of growth to come from. The Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has published sector development plans for five frontier sectors:

  • advanced materials and manufacturing
  • creative industries
  • digital, cyber and AI
  • health innovation and life sciences
  • low carbon

These plans were written with businesses and universities, and they cover employment sites, research and innovation support, skills and business support. For a founder, the practical point is that Manchester has a large market of agencies, tech companies and research-led businesses that buy services from small firms — and they usually expect a limited company with a VAT number once you pass the threshold.

Typical new Manchester companies include digital marketing and software agencies, freelance developers and data specialists, production companies working in TV and media, and consultancies around health and green technology.

Which registered office do you need?

A company formed for a Manchester business is registered in England and Wales. Its registered office must be in England or Wales, but not necessarily in Manchester.

If you work from home in Stockport, Salford or Trafford, you can use that address — but it will be shown publicly on the Companies House register, with your company's name next to it. Many founders prefer to keep their home address private. Our central London address works as a registered office for any England and Wales company. It receives your official post, which we scan and email to you.

Directors also need a service address for the public register. Your home address can stay private if you use a separate service address, such as our Director Service Address.

Local support for new businesses

Manchester has a well-developed network of free public support:

  • GC Business Growth Hub — Greater Manchester's Growth Hub, part of the Growth Company. Manchester City Council points new founders to its "Enterprising You" support for people with a business idea, self-employed people and freelancers. The Hub also runs a Growth Start-up Support Programme for start-ups that could reach five employees or £250,000 turnover within three years, with workshops on legal structure, tax, cash flow and funding.
  • Business & IP Centre Greater Manchester — the regional centre is at Manchester Central Library, with local centres in libraries across the region, including Altrincham, Ashton, Bolton, Bury, Eccles, Oldham, Stockport and Wigan. It helps with market research, business plans, intellectual property, workshops and networking.
  • Build A Business — a start-up programme at Manchester Central Library, which the council lists for people starting or running a new business.

Example

Chloe has run social media campaigns for brands as a freelancer from her flat in Salford. She is taking on a second person and wants to trade as a limited company so she can bid for agency contracts.

She orders the Digital Package for £290 incl. VAT and adds a Registered Office Address (£250 a year) and a Director Service Address (£250 a year), so her flat does not appear on the public register. She checks her chosen name with our free name check, orders on Tuesday morning and is registered on Wednesday.

Before she started, she also booked a free session at the Business & IP Centre at Central Library to check that no one else had registered her brand name as a trade mark.

How it works

  1. Choose a package and check your name. Everything happens online, from Manchester or anywhere else. Use our free name check first.
  2. Place your order and verify your identity. As a Companies House Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), we carry out the identity checks for each director and person with significant control, so you do not need a separate GOV.UK One Login check.
  3. We prepare and file the application. We draft the memorandum and articles, set up the share structure and submit everything to Companies House. The £100 Companies House fee is already in our price.
  4. Your company is registered. Once the checks are complete, most companies are registered within 24 hours. Your certificate of incorporation and company documents appear in your online client account.

Next steps

We cannot give tax advice for your situation. If you are deciding between a limited company and self-employment, speak to an accountant first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my Manchester home address as my registered office?

Yes, if you have permission to use it. It will be public on the Companies House register. To keep it private, use our central London registered office instead.

Do I need to visit an office in Manchester?

No. You can form your company entirely online, including identity checks. We do not have an office in Manchester; we are based in Edinburgh.

Can my company be registered in Manchester if the registered office is in London?

What free start-up support is there in Greater Manchester?

GC Business Growth Hub offers start-up support, and the Business & IP Centre at Manchester Central Library and its local library centres offer free research, IP help and workshops.
