In short: You can form a company for a Birmingham business fully online with Form My Company. It will be registered in England and Wales, so you can use your own workshop or office address, or our central London registered office if you want your home address kept private. Prices start at £290 incl. VAT, with the £100 Companies House fee included.
Starting a business in Birmingham
Birmingham sits at the centre of the West Midlands economy, and its strengths reflect the region's industrial history and its newer service and technology businesses. The West Midlands Growth Plan, published by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) in July 2025, focuses on five areas:
- advanced engineering, including electric vehicles and battery technology
- clean tech and energy
- health and medical technology
- digital and the creative industries
- professional and financial services
For a new founder, that mix means very different kinds of companies. One person sets up an engineering design consultancy supplying automotive manufacturers. Another opens a dental technology business, a games studio or an accountancy practice in the city centre. Many Birmingham start-ups also sell to larger firms in the regional supply chain, and those buyers often prefer — or require — to contract with a limited company.
Which registered office do you need?
A company formed for a Birmingham business is registered in England and Wales. Its registered office must be an address in England or Wales where official post can be received. It does not need to be in Birmingham.
Your options:
- Your own business premises — a unit, workshop or office you rent. Check your lease allows it.
- Your home address — allowed, but it becomes public on the Companies House register.
- Our central London address — a registered office for England and Wales companies, which keeps your home address off the register. We scan official post from Companies House and HMRC to you.
Whatever you choose, it must be a real address, not a PO box.
Local support for new businesses
Birmingham founders have access to free public support:
- Business Growth West Midlands — the region's business support service, coordinated by the WMCA and delivered with local councils, including Birmingham City Council. In July 2025 the Mayor announced that it is being refocused on businesses with high growth potential, with extra support for decarbonisation, health technology, creative industries scale-ups and exports.
- Business & IP Centre Birmingham — the regional centre of the British Library's Business & IP Centre network, based in the Library of Birmingham. The network offers free workshops, one-to-one support, market research databases and help with intellectual property such as trade marks and patents.
- The Business Support Service for England — the government helpline for general questions about starting and running a business.
If your business needs a licence — for example for food, taxis or alcohol — that is handled by Birmingham City Council, not Companies House.
Example
Imran is a mechanical engineer who has worked for an automotive supplier for ten years. He wants to set up as a contract design engineer, working mainly for manufacturers in the West Midlands. Two of the firms he talks to will only engage him through a limited company.
He already rents a small office in a business centre in the Jewellery Quarter, and his lease allows him to use it as a registered office. So he does not need our address. He chooses the Digital Package for £290 incl. VAT, which covers the Companies House fee, his articles and share certificates, identity verification and registration for Corporation Tax with HMRC.
He orders on a Thursday afternoon, verifies his identity that evening and receives his certificate of incorporation on Friday. The following week he opens a business bank account and starts invoicing.
How it works
- Choose a package and check your name. Everything happens online, from Birmingham or anywhere else. Use our free name check first.
- Place your order and verify your identity. As a Companies House Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), we carry out the identity checks for each director and person with significant control, so you do not need a separate GOV.UK One Login check.
- We prepare and file the application. We draft the memorandum and articles, set up the share structure and submit everything to Companies House. The £100 Companies House fee is already in our price.
- Your company is registered. Once the checks are complete, most companies are registered within 24 hours. Your certificate of incorporation and company documents appear in your online client account.
Next steps
- Make sure the name you want is free with our company name check.
- Have your own premises? The Digital Package at £290 incl. VAT covers the formation.
- Working from home? Add a Registered Office Address (£250 a year) or choose the Privacy Package, which includes a registered office and director service address for the first year.
If you are unsure about tax, VAT or whether a limited company suits your plans, talk to an accountant before you register.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my Birmingham home address as the registered office?
Yes, if you have the right to use it. But the address will appear on the public Companies House register. If you prefer privacy, use your business premises or our central London registered office.
Does my registered office have to be in Birmingham?
No. A Birmingham company is registered in England and Wales, so the registered office can be anywhere in England or Wales.
Do I need to visit an office in Birmingham to form a company?
No. Everything, including identity verification, is done online. We are an Edinburgh-based agent and do not have an office in Birmingham.
Where can I get free business advice in Birmingham?
Business Growth West Midlands is the region's public business support service, and the Business & IP Centre at the Library of Birmingham offers free workshops and research help.
Can a company formed online work with large West Midlands manufacturers?
Yes. An online formation creates exactly the same limited company as any other method. Buyers usually check your company number, registered office and VAT status, not how you formed it.
