In short: You can form a company for a Bristol business fully online with Form My Company. It will be registered in England and Wales, so our central London registered office is available if you do not want your home address on the public register. Prices start at £290 incl. VAT, with the £100 Companies House fee included.
Starting a business in Bristol
Bristol is the centre of the West of England economy, which also covers Bath and North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire. The West of England Growth Strategy, published by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority in September 2025, describes a regional economy worth £53.7 billion and points to fast job growth over the last decade in:
- clean energy (jobs up 140%)
- creative industries (up 82%)
- digital and tech (up 52%)
It also highlights Bristol's role in the UK's first AI supercluster, centred on the Isambard-AI supercomputer, and names Central Bristol and Bath and the West Innovation Arc among its growth zones. The "everyday economy" — shops, hospitality, care and local services — still provides most jobs in the region.
So a Bristol founder might be a solar and heat-pump installer, an animator or games developer, a software contractor, a sustainability consultant or an independent café owner. Many start as sole traders and form a limited company once they win larger contracts or take on staff.
Which registered office do you need?
A company formed for a Bristol business is registered in England and Wales. Its registered office must be in England or Wales, but it does not need to be in Bristol. A company registered in England and Wales cannot use a Scottish address, so our Edinburgh address is not an option here.
You can use your workshop or studio, your home (which then becomes public on the Companies House register), or our central London address, which is a registered office for England and Wales companies. Official letters are scanned and emailed to you.
Local support for new businesses
Bristol has free public support for new businesses:
- West of England Growth Hub — run by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority with local councils, covering Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, and South Gloucestershire. If you are just starting up or have fewer than three employees, it points you to free local authority start-up and business development support, plus guides on naming and registering a business, business plans, funding and cash flow.
- Business & IP Centre Bristol — the regional centre of the British Library's Business & IP Centre network, at Bristol Central Library, with local centres at Junction 3 Library in Easton, Knowle Library and Southmead Library. It offers free workshops, one-to-one support, market research databases and help with intellectual property.
- The Business Support Service for England — the government helpline for general start-up questions.
Example
Megan has installed solar panels as a subcontractor for three years. She now wants to quote directly to homeowners and small businesses in Bristol and South Gloucestershire, and to take on an apprentice next year.
She chooses the Certified Package for £450 incl. VAT, because she wants printed, professionally bound company documents to keep with her business records. She runs the business from a rented unit in Avonmouth and uses it as her registered office.
She orders on Friday morning, verifies her identity the same day and is registered by Monday. Her printed documents arrive by post later that week. Before hiring her apprentice she will add PAYE registration, or she could have chosen the Fully Inclusive Package, which includes VAT and PAYE registration from the start.
How it works
- Choose a package and check your name. Everything happens online, from Bristol or anywhere else. Use our free name check first.
- Place your order and verify your identity. As a Companies House Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), we carry out the identity checks for each director and person with significant control, so you do not need a separate GOV.UK One Login check.
- We prepare and file the application. We draft the memorandum and articles, set up the share structure and submit everything to Companies House. The £100 Companies House fee is already in our price.
- Your company is registered. Once the checks are complete, most companies are registered within 24 hours. Your certificate of incorporation and company documents appear in your online client account.
Next steps
- Check the name you want with our company name check.
- For a fast, paper-free formation, choose the Digital Package at £290 incl. VAT.
- Need printed documents? See the Certified Package.
- Working from home? Add a Registered Office Address (£250 a year) or choose the Privacy Package.
Rules for VAT and employing staff depend on your situation. Check with an accountant or adviser before you commit.
