Company formation in Leeds

Setting up a limited company in Leeds or across West Yorkshire? You can form it online with us, with identity checks handled for you.

In short: You can form a company for a Leeds business fully online with Form My Company. It will be registered in England and Wales, so you can use your own office or our central London registered office to keep your home address private. Prices start at £290 incl. VAT, with the £100 Companies House fee included.

Starting a business in Leeds

Leeds is West Yorkshire's main business centre, and its economy leans heavily on services. According to the Leeds Economic Vision, published by Leeds City Council in October 2025, financial and professional services make up about 40% of the city's economic output (GVA) — the council calls the city centre the "Northern Square Mile". The same vision highlights:

  • digital and tech, with over 3,000 digital and data companies in the city
  • health and healthtech, building on the city's health innovation strengths and the West Yorkshire Investment Zone
  • construction and advanced manufacturing, which the council says remain vital to the local economy

For new founders, that shapes the kinds of companies we typically see in Leeds: accountancy and legal support firms, IT contractors working for banks and insurers, software and data start-ups, and health technology businesses spun out of work in the NHS or universities. Many of these founders work with larger clients from the start, so they need a properly set up limited company — often with VAT and payroll — early on.

Which registered office do you need?

A company formed for a Leeds business is registered in England and Wales. Its registered office must be in England or Wales. It does not need to be in Leeds or in Yorkshire.

You can use:

  • your own office — for example a serviced office or co-working membership, if the provider allows registered office use
  • your home address — allowed, but it becomes public on the Companies House register
  • our central London address — a registered office for England and Wales companies that keeps your home address private. Official letters are scanned and emailed to you.

Bear in mind that your registered office is published and searchable. If you contract with large Leeds employers through a recruitment agency, your company details will be checked, and a professional address can help.

Local support for new businesses

West Yorkshire has a single public front door for business support:

  • West Yorkshire Business Growth Hub — run by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and part of the government's Growth Hub network. It offers free advice and support to start a business in West Yorkshire, with guidance on funding, skills and regulation, plus sector help for digital and tech, healthtech, financial and professional services and creative industries. You can contact the team by phone on 0113 348 1818.
  • Business & IP Centre Leeds — the regional centre of the British Library's Business & IP Centre network, at Leeds Central Library. The network offers free workshops, one-to-one support, market research databases and help to protect your intellectual property.
  • The Business Support Service for England — the government helpline for general questions about starting a business.

Example

Daniel and Priya are a developer and a former NHS physiotherapist who are building a booking and exercise app for physiotherapy clinics. They plan to hire a part-time developer within a few months and expect to pass the VAT threshold in their first year.

They choose the Fully Inclusive Package for £1,400 incl. VAT. On top of the formation and privacy features, it includes VAT registration, PAYE registration and our company filing service, so they can take on an employee without separate paperwork. They set up two shareholders with 50 shares each.

They order on a Wednesday. Both founders verify their identity online through us the same day, and the company is registered on Thursday. They then book a session with the West Yorkshire Business Growth Hub to ask about local innovation support.

How it works

  1. Choose a package and check your name. Everything happens online, from Leeds or anywhere else. Use our free name check first.
  2. Place your order and verify your identity. As a Companies House Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), we carry out the identity checks for each director and person with significant control, so you do not need a separate GOV.UK One Login check.
  3. We prepare and file the application. We draft the memorandum and articles, set up the share structure and submit everything to Companies House. The £100 Companies House fee is already in our price.
  4. Your company is registered. Once the checks are complete, most companies are registered within 24 hours. Your certificate of incorporation and company documents appear in your online client account.

Next steps

Whether you should register for VAT voluntarily, or how to split shares between founders, depends on your situation. Ask an accountant or lawyer if you are unsure.

Frequently asked questions

No. You can do everything online, including identity verification. We are based in Edinburgh and do not have an office in Leeds.

Yes. You can have two or more directors and shareholders. Each director and person with significant control must verify their identity, which we handle as an ACSP.

Is there free start-up support in Leeds?

Yes. The West Yorkshire Business Growth Hub offers free start-up advice, and the Business & IP Centre at Leeds Central Library runs free workshops and research help.
