In short: £150 adds one more class to your UK trade mark application, including the £60 UK IPO fee. We check the register in that class, help you word the specification and file it as part of the same application. It is ordered with our UK Trade Mark Application and follows the same timeline: usually about 3 months to registration if nobody opposes.
What's included
- £60 UK IPO fee for one additional class
- Clearance search of the UK register in that class
- Help wording the specification for that class
- Filing as part of your trade mark application
- Monitoring through examination and opposition
What a class is
UK trade marks are registered for specific goods and services, grouped into numbered classes. Clothing, software, cosmetics, restaurant services and business consultancy each sit in different classes. Your mark is only protected in the classes you apply for.
The UK IPO fee for an online application covers one class. Each extra class costs £60 in official fees. Our price of £150 per class includes that fee and the work of checking and wording it.
When you need more than one class
You need an extra class when your brand is, or will soon be, used for goods or services that fall outside your first class. Some examples:
- a clothing brand that also runs an online shop for other brands' products
- a software company that also sells training courses
- a café that also sells packaged coffee beans
More classes are not always better. Every class you add should match something you actually do or have a real plan to do. Classes you never use can make your application more likely to meet objections, and unused parts of a registration can later be challenged.
We look at what you sell today and what you realistically plan to sell in the next few years, and suggest only the classes that fit. If we think a class you have asked for is not needed, we tell you before you pay for it.
How it works
- When you order a UK Trade Mark Application, we review your business and suggest which classes fit.
- You add one £150 extra class for each additional class you choose.
- We search the register in each class and word the specification with you.
- Everything is filed together as one application.
Adding classes later
You cannot add a class to an application once it has been filed. If you need protection in a new class later, that needs a new application. Planning the classes before filing usually costs less than filing twice.
We are not solicitors or chartered trade mark attorneys, and our guidance is practical, not legal advice. For oppositions or disputes, we refer you to a chartered trade mark attorney. If you are building a new brand, see also Logo and Business Cards.
Frequently asked questions
How much is each extra trade mark class?
£150 per extra class, including the £60 UK IPO fee. The first class is included in our £595 application price.
Can I order an extra class on its own?
No. An extra class is added to a trade mark application we are filing for you. To protect a mark in a new class after filing, you need a new application.
How do I know which classes I need?
Tell us what you sell now and what you plan to sell soon. We suggest the classes that fit and explain why, so you only pay for what you need.
Does an extra class make registration take longer?
Not usually. All classes are examined and published together as one application.
Can I remove a class after filing?
You can usually remove a class or narrow the wording, but official fees already paid are not refunded.
